The Environmental Benefits of Repairing and Reusing

Environmental-Benefits-of-Repairing

Repair My Stuff is an initiative of Monaghan County Council, other local authorities, the Local Authority Waste Prevention Network (LAPN), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the repair industry. We’re striving to encourage and support the circular economy. The circular economy focuses on using resources for as long as possible, before recovering or regenerating them where possible to minimise waste and maximise the environmental benefits of repairing and reusing.

According to The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), people in Ireland produce over 15 million tonnes of waste each year. More often than not, products aren’t recycled correctly and typically fall into general waste and subsequently into landfills. This is detrimental to the environment and, in a time where climate change is becoming a pressing issue, we must all take responsibility to repair and reuse wherever possible.

The environmental benefits of repairing and extending the life of a product, instead of purchasing a new one, makes a real contribution, however small it may seem, to decreasing the over-consumption of valuable natural resources.

The manufacture and distribution of a product is often the most environmentally damaging aspect of a product’s lifecycle, so by repairing, you are doing your bit for the planet. It is certainly better to do something, however small than to do nothing at all!

Broadly speaking, less electricity and energy is needed to repair or upcycle a product. The overheads of running a repair business are much less than those at a waste plant or tip, so it’s less strain on the environment seeking out a repair instead of reaching for the rubbish bin.

Moreover, repairing your item means you don’t contribute to the issue of mass-production. It’s extremely accessible in this day and age to order a new product and receive it the next day but, more often than not, this new product will come from a factory pumping out fumes round the clock to get products made quickly and cheaply.

Many products are able to be repaired; some that you may have not even considered. Check out the Repair My Stuff directory and see what products you can repair instead of binning, even opting to repair one item instead of purchasing a new one makes a difference.
